ANIMAL FACTS

North American Wapiti (Elk)

Habitat: Forests and mountains from Canada to Mexico

Food: Grasses, twigs, bark, and herbs

Weight: 500-1000 pounds

Fun Facts: Elk are also called “Wapiti”, which is the Indian word for “White” referring to the animal’s rump. They are very strong and fast, running up to 35 mph and can move through the forest almost silently.

Elk can live 15-25 years. At one time, tens of millions of wapiti occupied all the forest areas throughout North America. The bull’s loud bugling in the fall signifies the mating (rutting) season. The calves are born in the spring with white spots for camouflage.
